Dancers provide Carriage Hills a Valentine's treat
Carriage Hills Living Center residents got a special Valentine's Day treat
Wednesday, courtesy of students at Burns Dance Studio. The dancers
performed several routines for the residents, delivered handmade valentines and
joined the residents and staff for a reception at the facility, located on East
Gate Drive behind Aiken Mall.
The performance gave Carriage Hills'
denizens a preview of the moves the studio's performing company has been
developing for a competition this March in Charlotte, N.C.
"One of our
dancers' stepfather is the administrator here, Robby Bowles," said Casey Frails
of Burns Dance Studio. "God has blessed our dancers with a wonderful
talent, and what better way to use those talents than to bring joy to
others?" "It was just wonderful," said resident Doris Portka. "The
children's dancing was just beautiful. I'd love for them to come back
again."
Carriage Hills Nursing Center is a licensed skilled nursing
facility which focuses on post-hospitalization rehabilitation, with a view
toward returning patients home to resume independent living. "It was
great, and it's definitely uplifting for our residents to see young children
here. I think it reminds them of their own children and grandchildren," said
Carriage Hills director of resident services Marcelle Brown.
"Having
events like this for our residents is not really that out of the ordinary here.
We try to do things to bring the community to them, since they're not always
able to go out and do things themselves."

Carriage Hills gets ready for big game ash
9/13/2008 1:24 AM
By HALEY HUGHES Staff writer Carriage Hills Living Center celebrated its annual
version of Augusta's Border Bash Friday. Red and black and garnet and black clashed
prematurely before today's game as residents and their families socialized, ate
and debated over which team is the best. One voice in particular was heralding
one team above the other. Present was Sir Big Spur, the official mascot of the
USC Gamecocks, who crowed several times in support of South Carolina. Kara Flanders,
Carriage Hills' regional director of marketing, said the facility has been holding
its Border Bash for the past five or six years. Executive Director Robby Bowles
said the event has gotten bigger each year. "Our objective is to provide opportunities
for our residents to be out in the community and when they can't do that, we bring
the community to them," she said. "I think everybody enjoys a party. It helps
create the atmosphere of life is fun - enjoy it. The staff enjoys it; the residents
enjoy it." The staff and residents proudly displayed their colors of choice, but
some Clemson orange was spotted among the crowd. In addition to the food and music,
Carriage Hills took the day to hold a silent auction to benefit Alzheimer's research
and the Memory Walk. S.C. House District 81 Representative-elect Tom Young celebrated
with Carriage Hills staff and residents Friday. "I wanted to catch some of the
pre-game spirit and support Carriage Hills," he said. Who will he be rooting for
today? That's easy. "South Carolina," Young said without a moment's hesitation.
Carriage Hills resident Doris Portka will be rooting just as much for Georgia
today. She lived most of her life in Augusta. "They went all out today," she said.
"This is a wonderful place. Everyone is just like a family."

What makes you proud?
Many things make me proud; I have two examples I'd like to share. Recently as
an Aiken Regional Medical Center patient, I had the opportunity to see the local
hospital's improving physical facility, the skill of the physicians, professionalism
of the nursing staff, encouragement of the therapists and the cheerful attitude
of those who delivered meals. Even the attendant who cleaned my room had an encouraging
smile. I think Aiken can be genuinely proud of the ARMC. Following my hospital
stay I received several days of rehabilitation at Carriage Hills Living Center.
Again the concerns, professionalism and cheerful attitudes of all employees and
staff impressed me; they made me proud. There were smiles, chuckles, even hearty
laughs as some patients shed a tear or grimaced through occupational therapy and
through physical therapy on their road to recovery. Below each tear one could
even detect a smile as they recovered. I want to personally thank these two facilities
- Aiken Regional Medical Center and Carriage Hills Living Center for making me
proud to have them in Aiken. Betty Thorngate Aiken

CONGRATULATIONS to Carriage Hill Living Center for receiving a “0” Deficiency
on their annual survey!
To "ALL" the staff at Carriage Hills: Fantastic job! That was such an unbelievable
survey. All of you should be recognized for the overall team effort that you provided.
I enjoy working with all of you and experiencing such a survey. If it was not
for each one of you it could not happen. I was especially impressed with the
ones performing the procedures. It is always tough and stressful because you never
know what is going to happen while being watched. The "LOVE" and "CARE" you have
provided the resident's at Carriage Hills Living Center was just acknowledged
through this year's annual survey. Thank you again, Judy Owens, RN, HSC

Local Businesses Give Holiday Gift to the Council on Aging
Regency Hospice and Carriage Hills Living Center have partnered to provide the
Aiken Area Council on Aging with a new commercial grade sink for their Meal on
Wheels Program. The Meals on Wheels program provides over 700 meals to seniors
needing meal assistance in Aiken County each day. The program workers prep the
meals for distribution and over 200 volunteers are instrumental in distributing
the hot meals to locations all over Aiken County. Scott Murphy, Executive Director
of the Aiken Council on Aging said, “The Meals on Wheels program is a vital service
for our local seniors. The new commercial grade sink will allow us to be more
efficient and assist with quicker clean up. We really appreciate the generosity
of Regency Hospice and Carriage Hills Living Center”
Liz Neal, Director of Community Outreach with Regency Hospice, said, “I was in
the center last week and saw the Christmas wish list that was posted on the wall.
On the wish list was a request for a commercial grade sink.” Neal continued,
“I think the Council on Aging is an excellent agency that does great work for
seniors in our community and I knew Regency Hospice would spearhead the effort
to purchase the sink.” With only two phone calls Neal had Carriage Hills Living
Center on board to share in the expense of the sink. “We are proud to be a part
of a community that works together to meet the needs of the people who live here,
said Kara Flanders, Regional Director of Marketing with Carriage Hills. “We try
to give back all year long in a variety of different ways. We are just so grateful
for how supportive this community has been to us and our mission and we are happy
to give to others.”
The Commercial grade sink will be installed the first part of January. For information
on the other items on the Council of Aging wish list or to volunteer with the
Meals on Wheels Program you may contact the agency at 803-648-5447.
